It is a common myth that men are excused from the need for a skincare regimen. Oftentimes, it is also thought that men only require a routine when they suffer from a specific condition. Although a certain treatment can help with an issue that one may suffer, establishing a proper skincare routine can work to prevent any issues in the first place.
The first step to beginning a skincare schedule is to determine what type of skin you have. Whether you have normal, oily, dry, sensitive, aging or combination skin, there are products for every type. No matter your skin type, your routine should include a cleanser, sunscreen, moisturizer, and scrub. The order of which these products should be applied can be read below.
STEP 1: Cleanse your skin. Utilize a facial cleanser that was designed for your type of skin. This will allow your specific issue to be treated by the cleanser. For example, if you typically have oily skin, using a cleanser made for oily skin will help to prevent excess oil buildup.
When washing your face, do so gently. Tugging and scrubbing harshly on your skin will only cause skin to sag faster. Gently scrub in circles and rinse off with cold water. Dry off by patting your face with a towel. This step should be performed in the morning and at night.
STEP 2: Exfoliate your skin. This step should be done every other day if you have normal skin. If your skin is sensitive, only perform this step once to twice a week.
The process of exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. By doing this, you are allowing new cells to go into the empty space. This results in a glowing, healthy complexion.
Similar to washing your face, put a dime-size amount of an exfoliating scrub on your hands and gently scrub in circles around your face. Particularly focus on dead skin hotspots: the forehead, nose, and neck.
STEP 3: Moisturize. Hydrating your skin is vital in every skincare routine. It is a myth that those who have oily skin should not moisturize their skin. Moisturizing works to hydrate your skin and provides nutrients to your skin cells, which results in a healthier, glowing face.
Skipping moisturizer can result in your skin overproducing oil through the overproduction of the sebum glands. Keeping a moisturized face will result in a balanced and clear face. This process should be done both morning and night. Our favorite moisturizer is Dermaset, which works to reduce wrinkles, enhances hydration and brightens dark circles.
STEP 4: Apply sunscreen. This step is extremely vital and should never be skipped. Men, more so than women, tend to forget about face sunscreen. The fact is, sunscreen is a major step in the prevention of aging. It should be applied every day and should not be reserved solely for days at the beach. Apply sunscreen immediately after applying moisturizer in the mornings. It is suggested to bring a small tube with you as you continue your day and reapply every three hours.
This simple routine is easy to follow and can be adapted into even the busiest of routines. Remember, self-care is vital to a long, healthy life. Do not neglect yourself—you deserve to be taken care of.
