Just when skincare couldn’t get more confusing, in came the face oil. Serums have often been cited as an essential part of the skincare routine. The reason serums are so vital for the skin is because they are concentrated with formulas that are known to combat various skin issues.
Of course, you probably have heard a lot about serums. They became a lot more popular when the Korean skincare trend was introduced.
So what about those face oils? They have become quite a trend in the past few days, enough to be considered an essential item in the daily skin care routine. But why should you choose one over the other (a serum or a face oil)? Or should you use both? Read on to find out.
Let’s talk serums first
Be honest, a majority of you are using a face serum because you read/ heard in more than one place that they are good for your skin and also that pretty Korean lady in that skincare video said so. All of us have been there.
The ingredients in the serum are formulated to be so small in size that they are able to reach the furthest layers of the epidermis.
These serums are often made in combination with water and actives such as peptides, vitamins that are rich in antioxidants, or resurfacing ones such as alpha hydroxy acids. The actives in the serum are developed specifically to affect the function of the skin; this is why serums have been developed to reach the layers of the skin that cannot be easily reached by moisturizers.
You need to incorporate serums into your skincare routine because they often help repair and protect your skin from several skin concerns such as acne, dryness, aging, and hyperpigmentation. The serums come in several different forms ranging from gel-like base to watery and oily ones.
Onto solving the mystery of face oils!
Face oils are used to provide hydration and nutrition to the skin. They usually consist of plant extracts and essential oils that provide the skin with lipids. These lipids tend to help secure the barrier of moisture that helps the skin remain balanced. They also help keep skin safe from any sort of dire environmental damage that could lead to acne and premature aging.
The main difference between oils and serums is that the oil molecules tend to be significantly larger than that of the serum. The oils will only penetrate the outermost layer of the skin. The oil blend will have more different sized molecules than the serum, which makes them significantly more usable as moisturizers than serum.
Bottom line is: if you want to treat a skin condition like acne and aging then it is best to go for serums, such as Dermaset’s anti-aging serum. However, if you want a good moisturizing effect, then use face oil. You can have both of these in your skincare routine as well, but it would be best for those with dry skin to go for the face oils.
